Many of the Ancient cultures . . . esp those who were rich, and esp. the people who were rich, loved to have animal jewelry on their pets.
The egyptians decorated thier cats like crazy. You can always see many of the decorations in war dogs. While not stones per say, they were nonetheless decorated.
An example is the dogs in the movie gladiator.
